Build a 30-Piece Capsule Wardrobe
A capsule wardrobe isn't 30 random items. It's a system of slots, each filled with a piece that earns its place by working with the others. If a sweater only goes with one pair of jeans, it's not capsule material. It's a problem.
The slot system
Build it as 30 slots, not 30 items:
- 5 tops (mix of tees, knits, blouses)
- 3 bottoms (one structured, one casual, one in between)
- 3 dresses or jumpsuits
- 3 outerwear (one coat, one jacket, one cardigan or blazer)
- 4 shoes (sneakers, loafers, boots, heels or sandals)
- 3 bags (everyday, work, evening)
- 9 wildcards (statement pieces, seasonal, swap-in items)
The six rules
- Every top works with at least two bottoms.
- Every bottom works with at least three tops.
- Stick to a tight color palette: 2-3 neutrals, 2-3 accent colors.
- If you wouldn't buy it again at full price, it doesn't belong in the capsule.
- Fit beats fabric beats cut beats brand. In that order.
- One in, one out. Forever.
Common mistakes
- Buying the lookbook: the influencer's capsule isn't yours. Build for your real life, not the photographed one.
- All neutrals: a 30-piece beige closet is depressing, not minimalist.
- Skipping the wildcards: the 9 wildcards are where personality lives. Don't fill them with more basics.
A working capsule isn't austere. It's a closet where every item has earned the hanger it's on.
