Caring for White Sneakers Without Ruining Them
White sneakers stay white if you treat them. They yellow, crease, and grey out if you don't. A 5-minute weekly schedule keeps them clean.

Caring for White Sneakers Without Ruining Them
White sneakers stay white if you treat them. They yellow, crease, and grey out if you don't. A maintenance routine of about five minutes a week is the difference between sneakers that stay sharp for two years and sneakers that look done in six months.
Daily (when you take them off)
- Wipe the upper with a dry microfibre cloth. That's it.
- If they're wet, stuff them with newsprint or a shoe tree. Never on the radiator.
- Untie before removing. Crushing the heel breaks the lining.
Weekly
- Take the laces out and wash them in a mesh bag (cold, gentle cycle).
- Damp microfibre cloth + a drop of dish soap on the upper. Wipe in small circles.
- For the rubber midsole and toe cap, use a magic eraser sparingly (it abrades).
- For the soles, an old toothbrush and dish soap clears most road grime.
Monthly
- For leather uppers: condition with a tiny dab of leather conditioner. White creams exist; don't use yellow.
- Re-apply a water-and-stain repellent spray. Two light coats, 10 minutes apart, dry overnight.
Don't
- Don't put leather sneakers in the washing machine. The leather will dry stiff and crack.
- Don't use bleach, even on canvas. It yellows the rubber permanently.
- Don't store them in plastic bags. They need to breathe.
- Don't dry them in direct sun. UV yellows synthetic uppers within hours.
What's worth replacing
Laces and insoles are cheap. Replace both at month six. The shoes will look 80% new.
