The Maxi Dress Field Guide

"Maxi dress" is five different silhouettes. The one that flatters you depends on your height, your proportions, and how the fabric falls. Here are the five and who they work for.

1. Column

Slim, body-skimming, falls straight from shoulder to ankle.

  • Best for: tall heights (5'7" and up).
  • Skip if: you're under 5'4". The unbroken vertical line shortens the frame visually.

2. A-line

Fitted at the bust, gradually widening to the hem.

  • Best for: almost everyone. The most universally flattering maxi cut.
  • Watch: hem length should clear your ankle bone, not pool at your foot.

3. Empire

Fitted under the bust, then flowy through the body.

  • Best for: petite frames. Lengthens the leg line by raising the visual waist.
  • Skip if: you have a long torso. It'll exaggerate the imbalance.

4. Tiered (prairie)

Multiple horizontal seams creating tiers of fabric.

  • Best for: tall heights and average builds. The horizontal lines need vertical room.
  • Skip if: under 5'5". The tiers chop the frame into too-short segments.

5. Wrap

Ties at the waist, V-neckline, fluid fabric.

  • Best for: hourglass and pear shapes. The wrap defines the smallest part of the waist.
  • Watch: tie firmly. The dress will gape if loose.

The universal rules

  • The hem should never drag. Get it altered if it does.
  • Maxi + chunky shoe (sandals with a thick sole, ankle boots) reads modern. Maxi + delicate sandal reads vacation.
  • One textured layer (denim jacket, chunky knit) keeps the dress from looking too "occasion."
