Black Tie vs Cocktail vs Formal: A Dress Code Decoder

"Cocktail" and "formal" mean different things on different invitations. What follows is the actual hierarchy, top to bottom, with what each one means in practice.

White tie (the most formal)

  • Men: tailcoat, white waistcoat, white wing-collar shirt, white bow tie, black patent oxford shoes.
  • Women: floor-length gown, opera-length gloves traditional, fine jewelry expected.
  • When you'll see it: state dinners, royal weddings, the Met Gala (in theory), almost nothing else in 2026.

Black tie

  • Men: tuxedo (peak or shawl lapel), white tuxedo shirt, black bow tie, black patent oxford or opera pumps, no belt (cummerbund or waistcoat instead).
  • Women: floor-length gown or sophisticated cocktail dress in a dark or jewel-tone fabric. Heels.
  • When: formal galas, opera, evening weddings, awards dinners.

Black tie optional / Creative black tie

  • Men: tuxedo if you have one; otherwise a dark suit (charcoal, navy) with a tie. "Creative" lets you swap the bow for a knit tie or an interesting jacket (velvet, patterned).
  • Women: midi or floor-length dress, dressier fabrics (silk, satin, sequin).

Cocktail

  • Men: dark suit and tie, dress shoes. Tuxedo would be overdressed.
  • Women: knee-length to midi dress, cocktail-appropriate fabrics, heels or dressy flats.
  • When: weeknight evening events, cocktail parties, less-formal wedding receptions.

Semi-formal / Festive attire

  • Men: suit and tie, but you can experiment with color and pattern.
  • Women: nice dress or dressy separates.
  • When: daytime weddings, holiday parties, business celebrations.

The rule when you're unsure

Look at the venue, the time of day, and the host. Formal venues + evening + an older host suggest dressing up. Casual venue + daytime + millennial host suggest dressing down. When still unsure, ask the host directly. They'd rather you ask than show up wrong.
