Denim Guide: Wash, Cut, and Rise Decoded
Three variables determine how a pair of jeans wears: wash, cut, rise. Get these right and you've solved 90% of the buying problem.
Wash
- Raw / unwashed: rigid, dark, will fade to your body. For purists. Long break-in period.
- Dark indigo / one-wash: the most versatile. Reads dressy enough for a sport coat, casual enough for sneakers.
- Mid-wash: casual baseline. Honest American-jeans territory.
- Light wash: warm-weather, casual, slightly retro.
- Black: rock and roll. Looks dressy with cropped silhouettes.
- Distressed: use sparingly. One distressed pair is plenty.
Cut
- Skinny: tightest through the leg. Mostly out of fashion in 2026 but works on slim builds with the right top.
- Slim straight: fitted through the thigh, straight from knee to hem. Most universally flattering.
- Straight: clean column from hip to hem.
- Relaxed straight: roomier through hip and thigh, straight at the leg.
- Wide leg: the dominant silhouette of the past few years. Flatters most builds when proportioned correctly.
- Flare / boot cut: fitted through thigh, kicks out below knee.
Rise
- Low rise (sits below the natural waist): dated, returning slowly. Tricky to wear well.
- Mid rise (just below the natural waist): the comfortable default.
- High rise (at or above the natural waist): lengthens the leg line, anchors a tucked-in top.
The fit checks
- Sit down and stand up. The waistband shouldn't gap at the back when you sit.
- Pinch the fabric at the thigh. Half an inch of slack is right; tight skin = too small; two inches = too big.
- Length: proper hem ends at the top of the shoe (no break or quarter break).
Care
- Wash cold, inside out, every 5-10 wears (never every wash. Kills the indigo).
- Hang dry. The dryer shrinks denim and sets creases.
- Spot-clean spills as they happen.
